After 1985, the festival was discontinued due to a decline in public interest towards the song entries. From the fourth festival onwards, the competition was divided up into able and amateur divisions, to manage new songwriters a level playing field without competing with more well-known composers.

This songwriting competition was originally open to any music composers. These festivals launched numerous the careers of songwriters & singers who interpreted the songs, and made original Filipino music more than a few memorable together with modern-day song classics. The Metro Manila Popular Music Festival also known as Metropop was launched by the Popular Music Foundation of a Teodoro Valencia as alive as Imee Marcos.
